Papua New Guinea police and immigration officers have entered the former detention centre with refugees inside reporting large numbers of officers, including the paramilitary police Mobile Squad, shouting and demanding refugees hand over phones. The refugees say they have been given an hour to leave with officers being intimidating and aggressive as they dismantle structures and throw away refugees’ belongings.
Peter Dutton, has confirmed a “police operation” is underway and has accused the detainees of trashing the centre. He likened the situation to building a new house for tenants but they refuse to move in. Dutton’s repeated claims the alternative accommodation is ready and suitable for detainees to move to has been repeatedly debunked by observers and published videos and photos.
