A follow-up from yesterday’s post (‘Dutton, Paladin, the US … your support for refugees is needed more than ever’).
Here’s another way to help that will take a minute …
8. Make a tax deductible donation to the Refugee Council of Australia – the peak body in the refugee sector.
CEO, Paul Power, has written:
Now, more than ever, we must work together in a strategic, coordinated way to minimise the impacts of the government’s harsh policies on refugees and people seeking asylum. The first six months of a newly elected government is crucial. What we do now will determine what happens in the next few years. At this critical time, it’s essential to have a well-resourced peak body in the refugee sector to facilitate this strategic approach. Since the federal election, we have already gathered leaders in the refugee sector to strategise how to achieve our goals under the re-elected government.
Now, we need the resources to move forward; to get everyone still trapped on Nauru and Manus to safety, and to ensure people seeking asylum in Australia have access to a life-saving basic welfare program.
As a member of our community, I know you find Australia’s treatment of refugees and people seeking asylum as appalling as I do. In the past 12 months, we have seen that change is possible, but not without resources and support from people like you.
If you have already donated this tax-time, thank you for your support. If you haven’t yet donated, we are still around $200,000 short of our fundraising target and urgently need your help.
Realistically, we cannot change all of the government’s policies, but we can mitigate the negative impact they have on vulnerable people seeking asylum.
Please donate here to help protect the children, women and men desperately seeking asylum and refuge in Australia.
